📎 Art Handling Specialist

Role Purpose: Responsible in supervising the art handlers and facilitating best movement conditions for Orientalist Museum collections on site, off site and transit locations so as to facilitate physical access to the collections for both internal and external users.

Duties & Responsibilities:

◾️Support head of section in development and implementation of sections’ goals and objectives
◾️Manage the physical requirements of Orientalist Museum Collections, ensuring they are appropriately housed, stored and handled
◾️Manage the art-handlers’ team and the mount-making projects
◾️Collaborate with the Head of Collection Care Unit and Collections Registrar on storage reorganisation projects
◾️Supervise, train and deploy project staff as necessary on collection related work
◾️Comply with relevant Orientalist Museum policies and procedures, relevant legislation and regulations, industry standards and ethics
◾️Coordinate elements of and/or manage projects which typically relate to issues of storage, preventive conservation and space metrics, including taking primary responsibility for the coordination of the Collections Emergency Response Plan within the framework of the Orientalist Museum’s Collections plans and QM Crisis Response plans

Qualifications/Requirements: 
◾️Technical or vocational qualification in Carpentry, Metalwork or crafts and/or BA in Art, Art History or relevant field along with knowledge of Operations and Logistics
◾️At least 8 years of experience in a similar position; Experience in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the management of a diverse cultural collection
◾️Knowledge, understanding and experience of both the principles of collection management practice and physical management of museum, library, art and archival materials
◾️Knowledge and understanding of computer-based collection management systems
◾️Collections Management standards, policies and procedures
◾️Security Protocols
◾️Shipment procedures of art works
◾️Ability to supervise and train staff and volunteers, and to monitor budgets
◾️Extensive knowledge of national and international principles, practices, standards and ethics relating to the documentation and management of cultural collections
◾️Language Skills: Fluency in English, Arabic desirable
◾️Proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office

📎 Paintings Conservator

Role Purpose: The Conservator will be expected to carry out conservation treatment on the Museum’s Paintings collections, care for relevant collections, ensuring their physical safety- stability, keeping detailed records of the works carried out along with communicating the Paintings Conservator activities with his/ her colleagues and interest groups.

Duties & Responsibilities:

◾️Visits Academics and Scholars
◾️Ensures adherence to policies and procedures
◾️Works as part of the Collections section and provides accurate information to the Orientalist Museum staff
◾️Carries out conservation treatments on the Museum’s Paintings collections, cares for relevant collections, ensuring their physical safety-stability, keeping detailed records of the works carried out
◾️Communicates the Paintings conservation activities with his/ her colleagues and interest groups
◾️Assists with day to day running of the laboratory (including procuring materials and equipment)
◾️Ensures familiarity with condition surveys with the ability to undertake same
◾️Ensures having a good knowledge of monitoring and controlling the environment in which collections are stored or displayed to prevent deterioration
◾️Liaises with museum curators, registrars and other colleagues
◾️Assists with setting up exhibitions
◾️Applies preventive conservation principles and care of collections with interest into Paintings
◾️Packs objects for transport and accompanying objects in transit to other locations if required
◾️Takes supervisory roles occasionally (i.e. interns, volunteers and newer staff members)
◾️Publishes his/her work, under the Orientalist Museum policies and procedures
◾️Any other activity as described by the Head for Conservation

Qualifications/Requirements:
◾️BA or MA/MSc in Conservation of museum objects - Specializing in paintings. Master’s Degree is highly preferred.
◾️Minimum of 4 years work experience
◾️Be familiar with Paintings technology and deterioration of Paintings (both support and painted matter)
◾️Excellent communication skills
◾️Strong research ability (scientific, academic, etc.) issues that relate to Paintings conservation
◾️Ability to work individually and as part of a team
◾️Professional and friendly manner
◾️Interested in professional development

Desirable

◾️Communication in Arabic and /or other languages
◾️Knowledge in Art History
◾️Have a good network of specialised contacts
